Università degli Studi di Pavia is one of the oldest universities in Europe. An edict issued by King Lotarius quotes a higher education institution in Pavia as already established 825 A.D. Currently, the University comprises 9 faculties structured in 49 departments and institutes, employs 1135 faculty members and has about 23000 students. It has been recognized by the European Commission as a Jean Monnet European Centre of Excellence. Among the excellence fields of the Department of Computer Engineering and System Science there are modeling and identification of biomedical systems, bioinformatics and knowledge management.
The people involved in this project are world experts in PK/PD modelling, model identification, Bayesian estimation, MCMC methods, population modelling. They have developed several models in different fields also in collaboration with pharma companies (including a widely used the tumor growth inhibition model). They have also a significant expertise in the implementation of efficient identification/simulation algorithms in MATLAB, WinBUGS, R. In addition, they have also experience in managing ontologies and markup languages.
